🏛️ A Gilded Age landmark
The Dakota was completed in 1884 and designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, the architect who later gave New York the Plaza Hotel. When it opened, its location on the then-undeveloped Upper West Side was considered so remote that, as the story goes, people joked it might as well be in the Dakota Territory — and the name stuck. Its dramatic German Renaissance styling quickly made it one of the city’s most desirable addresses, and it remains so today.

For music fans, the Dakota is inseparable from John Lennon, who made it his home in the 1970s. It was here, at the building’s entrance, that he was tragically killed in December 1980. His widow, Yoko Ono, has continued to live at the Dakota for decades.
